The orb arrived on David’s doorstep with few instructions, just a note saying it could transport people through multiple dimensions. He was skeptical at first, but the thing seemed to be glowing with no power source and no way to open it to reveal any contents inside.
With a thought, the glowing orb changed colors, and David began to notice small differences. The color his house went from blue to brown; the cars now drove on the opposite site of the street. He picked up the orb and things slightly changed again. This time his nieghborhood seemed to revert to a 1950s style. Each time he placed the orb down and picked it back up, it would change color and, it seemed, he would be teleported to a new dimension instantly. Most of the time, the changes were pretty subtle.
He soon realized that he had no good way to tell when he was back in his own dimension; he would just have to settle for close enough. But he figured it couldn’t hurt to do some exploring around all these slightly different dimensions either. He went downtown to explore some of the changes. It seemed his small town in this dimension was quite a big city. Missing that quaint quiet charm, he reach into his pocket to pull the orb out. It glowed yellow this time and began steaming. Unlike the other times he had used it, this time his body changed. He hadn’t considered that only his consciousness had been traveling to various dimensions up until this point, and in this particular world, he had been born a woman.
Not wanting to deal with that, he placed the orb back in his pocket and brought it out again. However, it stayed yellow and was still steaming. Nothing changed around him. And worst of all, he was still a woman. Was it malfunctioning? The the steam mean it was overheated? Was he going to be stuck like this? Was he going to be trapped in a whole different dimension?
