I formed a metal band with a couple friends in college, and we had been playing shows at small clubs across the states for a few years. We lost money on every show, but we were just a bunch of dudes with day jobs who liked to play music, so we didn’t mind.
Getting contacted by a booker in Asia, we thought it would be our big break. Sure, it was just a few dates in similarly small venues and we’d lose even more money, but exposure to an international audience seemed like a no brainer and a fun vacation.
We never expected the Great Shift to hit right in the middle of tour. One second I was loading my own gear into a crapy dive bar, and the next minute I’m sitting backstage in a fancy green room. I’m wearing pink. I was a woman! There were several other women around me. It didn’t take me long to realize it was the rest of my band, and we had all swapped bodies with a kpop girlband.
The crowd had all swapped as well, and were quite restless. A promoter asked us if we knew music, and we nodded. He didn’t care what we did as long as we performed. So despite having the bodies of pop stars, we went out to the arena stage and played our metal songs. It was difficult for me to growl the vocals with my new body, but I did my best. Defying expectation, the entie crowd seemed really into it. It wasn’t how we expected to have our big break in music, but we weren’t complaining.
