Over the next few works, Jerry did everything he could to not lose himself and become Emily. He started by just trying to maintain who he was. He binge watched sports on television; he slacked and skipped as many classes as possible. Yet it wasn’t long before he found sports boring and he felt guilty about skipping class.
As time went on, his strategy changed. Instead of trying to hold onto himself, he just started trying to do the exact opposite of what Emily would do. He looked at her all-black wardrobe and went out and bought some floral dresses instead. He bought a pair of heels in an attempt to contrast her numerous sneakers. The outfits were all uncomfortable, but he was sure he never saw Emily wear anything like it. He was convinced he could fight it.
In reality, he was just exploring the feminine/girlie side of Emily’s personality that she often pushed aside. He wasn’t successfully fighting anything; it would only be a matter of time before he became Emily in not just body but also mind.
